What promised to be our best home ground draw of the year on Old Timers Day disintegrated as three teams defaulted leaving just the 2.30 games for our Premiers and Presidents for the many who turned up. While the Women were advised on Friday that Tawa would not be fronting the Avalon Colts( with 13 players) and Premier Reserves( without a front row) at least turned up with what they had and a friendly game was played by the Colts – hopefully points for and against won’t become a issue later on in the season as this team is playing some great footie. The Reserves and Avalon tried to play a game but a concussion by one of the Avalon few not long after the game started saw it called off with barely a sweat raised. We can all tut tut about this but the reality is there are too many teams for the number of players – another Colts team also defaulted as well as an  U85kg team – they had the numbers but too many “fatties”!

On to the main game – a little like last week’s game V J’ville  except for the standard of refereeing although no comms between the touchies and the ref didn’t help. Our Captain was fantastic and two tries was a just reward. The introduction of Nu’u Lene in the second half saw Avalon’s scrum wilt and it was soon Golden Oldies scrums which didn’t work in our favour but certainly helped Avalon. Lui Aukuso came on with 10 or so to go and his chip and chase after a break down the shortside led to Whetu’s last try  showed that after debuting in 1995 he could still be  force in Premier Rugby, probably a bit sore on Saturday night though!

Attached is the latest WRFU results and tables – just like last week there are still six teams trying to get into the last four Jubilee Cup spots – with a week to go Wellington on 33 points can still miss out if they lose to Poneke who have beaten HOBM and Wainui in the last two weeks after looking dead and buried a month ago and –  the loser of OBU- Wainui  and or Upper Hutt if they lose to MSP will both play Hardham Cup as well as Poneke if they lose to Wellington.
