Junior Rugby IS for all ages
Welcome to the Oriental Rongotai (ORIES) Junior Rugby Club, known as the “Mini Magpies”. 2016 is going to be a great rugby year.
Whether you’re new to Ories, or returning for another season, it’s great to have you at the club. The Mini Magpies have around 160
junior players aged between five and 13 across 10 teams. We also have a nursery grade for the under four’s who are keen to have a go.
The Mini Magpies provide a safe and fun environment for young people to learn how to play and develop rugby skills.
Each junior team has a coach and manager. Their contact details will be given to players and parents at the start of the season. They will be the first point of contact for game information during the season. Additionally, if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

The club motto is ‘Once an Orie always an Orie’, so welcome!

Rippa Rugby: Under 6 & Under 7 (Beginner rugby)
Rippa Rugby is a non-contact, easy-to-play game for both boys and girls. It is played by children up to the age of eight and is a fun
introduction to rugby.
The rules are simple and the game easy to learn, providing children with excellent ball-handling and running skills. The teams are 7 aside and play on a reduced field thus providing an easy introduction to our national game.
TACKLE RUGBY: Under 8 – Under 10 (Learning rugby)
Tackle rugby begins with U8s. Weight restrictions for junior rugby also begin in this grade to keep games safe. Tackle provides an
opportunity for boys and girls to start getting into the physical contact of rugby in the Ories way: safe, smart & sensational.
This is 10 aside team and the field is reduced to half size.
FULL RUGBY: Under 11 – Under 13 (Developing rugby)
Full 15 a side teams playing full field structured rugby.
At this grade our kids are playing rugby with little restrictions with rules, however, safety is still paramount and coaching this is a
priority at Ories.
